National Indigenous History Month
In June, we celebrate National Indigenous History Month to honour the history, heritage, and diversity of Indigenous peoples in Canada. National Indigenous History Month is a time for learning about, appreciating, and acknowledging the contributions First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people have made in shaping Canada.
Edmonton Catholic Schools continues to support the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Calls to Action, Teacher Quality Standard, Leadership Quality Standard, Superintendent Quality Standard, and Division Goals.
National Indigenous Peoples Day: June 21, 2026
This year marks the 30th anniversary of National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada.
Celebrated each year on June 21, the summer solstice, this day recognizes and celebrates the heritage, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.
In 1996, Governor General Roméo LeBlanc declared June 21 of each year as "National Aboriginal Day." This was the result of consultations and statements of support from various Indigenous groups:
- in 1982, the National Indian Brotherhood, now the Assembly of First Nations, called for the creation of National Aboriginal Solidarity Day
- in 1995, the Sacred Assembly, a national conference of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people chaired by Elijah Harper, called for a national holiday to celebrate the contributions of Indigenous Peoples
- in 1995, the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples recommended the designation of a National First Peoples Day
On June 21, 2017, the Prime Minister issued a statement announcing the intention to rename this day "National Indigenous Peoples Day."
Discover Indigenous Perspectives Through Our Virtual Calendar
As we mark the 30th anniversary of National Indigenous Peoples Day, Edmonton Catholic Schools is bringing learning to life through a 15-day virtual calendar. Each school day leading up to June 21 offers a simple way to explore Indigenous perspectives, stories, and teachings.
Daily activities are designed to spark curiosity, encourage respectful learning and support meaningful conversations about the diverse cultures and experiences of First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples across Canada.
